Should You Repair or Replace Your Concrete Driveway?

The first question most homeowners ask when they see a crack is: do I need to replace the whole driveway? The honest answer is: it depends on what's under the crack.

If your slab is still level, still draining the right direction, and the damage is surface-level — hairline cracks, minor scaling, or spalling — a repair or resurface can buy you years more life. Concrete repair and resurfacing in the Huntsville area typically runs $3 to $8 per square foot, far less than a full replacement. Crack repair, joint sealing, patching, and a resurfacing overlay over a sound slab are all legitimate options when the base is still solid.

But if the slab is settling, heaving, or cracking in a pattern that points to base failure, a repair is a band-aid. The problem isn't the concrete — it's the dirt underneath. Patching the surface won't stop the clay from moving, and you'll be back to the same crack in a season or two. In that case, replacement is the smarter long-term call. You tear out the old slab, regrade and compact the subgrade, and pour new concrete built for North Alabama's red clay.

How do you tell the difference? Look at the pattern. Hairline cracks along control joints are normal — that's the concrete cracking where it was designed to. Random cracks across the face of the slab, or sections that have dropped or risen relative to each other, point to movement underneath. A slab that's ponding water or draining toward the house has a grade problem that a resurface won't fix.

The best way to know for sure is a free on-site estimate. Larry Rowe will look at the whole driveway — the slab, the joints, the drainage, and the base where it's exposed — and tell you plainly which makes more sense. He won't push a replacement when a repair will hold, and he won't sell you a repair he knows won't last.

That's the third option Affordable Concrete Restoration offers North Alabama homeowners: not paying too much for a replacement you don't need, and not paying twice for a repair that won't hold. Just an honest assessment and the work that actually makes sense for your slab.
